Indiana Unemployment

Indiana unemployment will be one of three major issues addressed in a legislative session beginning on Wednesday and scheduled to run through April.

Indiana lawmakers have placed finding a solution to unemployment issues at the top of the docket along with designing a new budget and creating new congressional and state legislative boundaries.

Businesses and unemployed citizens are worried about possible changes to their benefits and unemployment insurance. Many jobs have already been lost due to higher taxes imposed on businesses.

Businesses pay taxes into an unemployment insurance trust fund, which then pays unemployment benefits when Hoosier employees are laid off. Indiana has had a structural imbalance in the fund – paying out more than it collected – since 2000. Indiana started borrowing money from the federal government to pay claims in late 2008 and currently owes about $2 billion. That doesn’t include $60 million in interest.
